Editing Lesson Blog

Today in class we learned how to use the cameras and how to edit our footage. We learned the procedures for signing out a camera, SD card reader, the media pass, and a tripod. To use the camera, you open it to turn it on. To charge the camera, there is spot next to the hand grip where the plug goes. I also learned that the the little door is where the SD card goes. The red button starts the recording and is also used to pause. We were taught how to properly use the tripods and to carry them shut and closed. There is a top part on the tripod that you remove and attach to the camera. During this lesson I also learned that you can adjust the knobs on the tripod to make pan and tilt movements and to also make it higher or lower. Knowing how to properly use the camera and tripod are very important so that we know how to use them and can film efficiently.
We also learned the procedures for dumping footage. We were taught that dumping is when you take footage from the camera and put it onto the computer. On the computer you tap pinnacle studios and then take the the SD card and put it into the SD card reader. We were told to have one person login and to have the same person every time so that we know where our footage is. Then, minimize pinnacle studios and insert the SD card reader. We were told to make a folder on the desktop once we inserted the SD card reader. The folder is where all our footage that we have will be moved to. After all of that, we check the DCIM for footage on the SD card. If we can’t find our footage, then we go to private and click AVCHD, then go into our stream. To move it over to the folder, we highlight everything, and drag it. When we are done dumping, we take the SD card out, and return the reader.
Today in class we also learned how to import, edit and export our footage.  To import, we learned to import the footage from the desktop to pinnacle studios. We were instructed to click import, look for our folder, and import all of our footage by clicking import on the bottom. To edit, we go to edit and we will see all of our raw footage there. We also learned to build on the AV track 2 where the title would be on the top, film is second, and sound is on the bottom. To cut, we move the film to right before we want to cut, and click the razor blade which will split the footage and then we are able to delete the portion we don’t want. Other editing techniques we learned today was how to add transitions, titles, and music. The music needs to be on mp3 and then we add it to the folder and import the same way as footage. Also, we were taught how to detach sound and footage if we just wanted one or the other. Finally, to export we click export (should be mp4), click best quality, then click start export and put into folder. Most importantly, we were instructed to minimize pinnacle studios and make sure it saved into the folder before shutting the software down.
